Kiran Rana, senior dating officer at the India Times, is looking for vendors of psychometric test for the Liv2luv.com dating site. The test should analyze a user personality automatically after a series of questions (via images or text) and then reflect that in his/ her profile.
Interested parties should contact Kiran Rana at Kiran.Rana@indiatimes.co.in.

In preparation for an interview with one of Match’s “It’s Ok to Look” spokes-singles I logged in this morning and this is what I saw on the home page. A photo of a crying man touting the fact he is not wearing underwear. I’ll tell you why I’m crying, Match charged me for a $50 subscription extension but my profile has been hidden for five months.

Luvoo is known for being a pink sheet public company, it’s bizarre dating videos, sketchy spokescelebs, and now, a pet grooming service.
L. Yvonne Vanhoek, President of Luvoo International Inc., stated, “Most singles own either a dog or a cat. They don’t want to come home to an empty house. We will offer the Wag My Tail services to members of luvoo.com so long as they live close to one of our locations, or they can request our mobile services at discounted prices. We are also in the process of establishing www.wagyourtail.com an online dating site for pet lovers. This, by all means, I call a perfect match!”
I call it not the best use of your resources, just not seeing the business case for this acquisition. Does this mean Luvoo is going to the dogs?

According to Barron’s, by way of SeekingAlpha, PlanetOut is running out of cash and the stock is down more than 31% in the last two days of trading.
With the ongoing slide in the stock - on Monday, PlanetOut shares fell 17 cents to 98 cents - the company’s market cap is down to a paltry $17.3 million. (CFO Dan) Miller notes that the company’s Gay.com URL is “incredibly valuable.” That may be true; what’s not clear is whether the company can raise enough cash to avoid having the site and the rest of PlanetOut’s assets sold off in a Chapter 11 fire sale.
The company has hired Allen & Co. to consider strategic alternatives.

I couldn’t improve on that classic headline in today’s Wall Street Journal article about PlentyofFish.
Reporter Lee Comes calls PlentyofFish a “model for the next generation of Web entrepreneurship.” He actually travelled to PoF world headquarters, which is Markus’s spare bedroom. At one point during the visit, 43,000 people were at PlentyOfFish, with 500 Web pages a second being sent out. That’s some serious traffic.

I’ve received some general feedback from attendees of last week’s Internet Dating Conference, which took place in Shanghai, May 17-18, 2007. Here are photos from the event. I realize this isn’t much. If you were there, leave your thoughts on the event in the comments.
30 people attended.
Duane Dahl, founder of PerfectMatch was a no-show speaker. Anyone know what happened to him?
The first night’s late-night karaoke sounded like people had a great time. You know who you are.
Event food was great, amenities were nice.
Talks were redundant. Most suffered from Powerpoint-itis. Tiny type-filled pages that presenters read from verbatim.
Dr. Song Li was there. He runs Sinofriends, which is considered the largest and oldest dating site in China. As I understand it, he is also the guy who created SMS spam.
Best Buddies? was there checking out the Chinese gay market.
The Mergers & Acquisition panel focused on doing due diligence in China at much higher level. Major concern about lack of code of ethics and multiple sets of accounting books. Big problem is getting money out of china.
That’s it, add your thoughts in the comments.
The 3rd Annual San Francisco Internet Dating Conference is coming July 26-27, 2007 in San Francisco. The event will cover mobile technologies for the social networking and internet personals industry.

If that headline didn’t do it for you, it probably didn’t work for the intended audience either. Touting a user interface technology and a development platform in the title of press release is not the smartest way to go about promoting a new dating site. After all, who besides net.heads has any idea what Ajax or RoR is?
On the other hand, MakeFriendsOnline recently sent out and email stating too much technology can scare off members:
A brand new survey released this week suggests additional technology is not always a bonus and sites could put themselves out of business if they carelessly add new features without consulting their existing member base.
Dating & friendship website makefriendsonline.com surveyed their members to see if they’d like a Video Chat option. Whilst an excited 75% of men were eager to give it a go, a resounding 56% of women found the whole idea off-putting and wouldn’t even consider it.
This may be influenced by the seedy image webcams have, thanks of course to the seedy motives of so many single male webcam users! But whatever the reason, MFO have decided to put those plans on hold for the moment, rather than risk becoming another site left wondering where all the women have gone.
Careful planning and selection of technology, features and user interface improvements can just as easily sink a dating site as attract more members. A well thought out strategy for (re)developing your site requires a balanced approach based on realistic goals, the right resources and the vision to move beyond the usual. Does your site have what it takes?

After week of political posturing, the New York Times says that Myspace will hand over to state attorneys general the names, addresses and online profiles of thousands of known convicted sex offenders who have opened up accounts on the service. More than 7,000 profiles of convicted sexual predators have been removed as well. States must subpoena Myspace for specific information on suspects. A dozen states have done so already.
Seven thousand profiles is a drop in the bucket in relation to the 180 million profiles currently on Myspace. Profile removal is straightforward. These people should not have been able to get on the service to begin with, but Myspace would never have flourished with tighter security controls in place from day one.
The problem now becomes how to implement safety measure during the signup process, which will certainly curtail the number of new members as they move on to new sites.
Me? I’m over on Facebook now. I’ll keep my Myspace account but I almost never log in anymore. Speaking of Facebook, expect big news on Thursday about the evolution of the Facebook platform.
